Manchester United have opened talks with Newcastle over a loan deal for goalkeeper Martin Dubravka after waning interest in Eintracht Frankfurt’s Kevin Trapp.

Ten Hag, who want new competition for David De Gea, rates Trapp but United are unwilling to meet Frankfurt’s €25m (£21m) price tag and have now turned their attention to Dubravka. An agreement has yet to be reached but talks are ongoing over a deal for the 33-year-old Slovakia international.

Trapp, who has six caps for Germany, first joined Frankfurt on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in 2018 before making a permanent move to the Bundesliga club the following year.

When asked about his future, Trapp said on Monday: “As I said when I first came to Frankfurt, it’s nice when rumors like this come up. It’s a nice recognition, but I can’t comment on that.”

Another Bundesliga goalkeeper, Borussia Mönchengladbach No. 1 Yann Sommer is among a number of other goalkeepers United have scouted.

But Old Trafford insiders have suggested they don’t settle for a deal for the 33-year-old Swiss. United have also been linked with Watford and Austria goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann this summer.

De Gea has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Old Trafford, although United have the option to extend the contract by a further year until June 2024.

The Spaniard endured a flawed performance in the 4-0 humiliation at Brentford as two individual errors resulted in goals but while he responded well in Monday’s 2-1 win over Liverpool, Ten Hag is looking to bring in a keeper it can provide quality competition.

After Dean Henderson joined Nottingham Forest for a season, the 36-year-old former Burnley and Aston Villa goalkeeper is currently De Gea’s understudy.

According to Telegraph Sport, Southampton and Bournemouth are currently leading the race to sign Arsenal midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Maitland-Niles is not part of Mikel Arteta’s plans this season and is allowed to leave the club before the end of the summer transfer window.

Both Southampton and Bournemouth are said to have expressed interest in signing the 24-year-old whose versatility makes him an attractive option.

Maitland-Niles, who has played five games for England, can play both as a full-back and as a central midfielder.

West Ham United have also shown tentative interest in Maitland-Niles but David Moyes is focusing on other targets for now, including Lyon’s Lucas Paqueta and Club Brugge’s Hans Vanaken.

Maitland-Niles spent the second half of last season on loan at Roma, where he made eight appearances in Serie A. He was on loan at West Bromwich Albion in 2020/21.

Another player close to leaving Arsenal is record-breaking new signing Nicolas Pepe, who will join Nice on loan.

Hector Bellerin is also expected to leave the club before the deadline, although the terms of his departure have not yet been agreed.
